Each year in Japan, some 900,000 people are diagnosed with cancer, and more than 350,000 die of it. While advances in medicine have led to treatments for various diseases and reduced mortality rates, there is still no fundamental, definitive treatment for cancer.
BNCT, a neutron-based radiation therapy, has the potential to target and eliminate individual cancer cells while leaving surrounding healthy cells unscathed. Until now, BNCT required large-scale facilities and had been difficult to install in hospitals. With this in mind, we are developing a new generation of ultra-compact BNCT systems that can be set up in hospitals of almost any size.
